Taylor Swift asks fans to vote after supporting Kamala Harris

Taylor Swift chose her words carefully when she spoke about the 2024 election at the MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday night.

Although the superstar made waves with her support for Vice President Kamala Harris earlier this week, Swift did not comment directly on politics during the music-packed show at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York.

As the “Fortnight” singer thanked her followers for voting for her and presenting her with the coveted Video of the Year award, she reminded people of another important competition that is coming up soon.

“The fact that this award was chosen by the fans and that you voted for it, I really appreciate it,” she told the cheering audience. “And if you’re over 18, please register to vote for something else that’s very important soon: the 2024 presidential election.”

Swift left the stage without directly indicating which candidate she would support.

But on Tuesday night, the star dropped a bombshell, speaking out in support of Harris just minutes after the vice president’s debate against former President Donald Trump ended.

In her announcement, the “Karma” singer praised Harris as someone who “fights for the rights and causes that I believe need a warrior to represent them.”

The Instagram post was captioned “Childless cat lady,” a snarky reference to Trump’s running mate JD Vance and his widely derided comments about “pathetic,” left-leaning women without children.

It seems that Swift’s political statement could already have a big impact on the election campaign.

A custom link the pop star shared on Instagram that directed to Vote.gov was clicked more than 400,000 times in 24 hours, according to the General Services Administration, the agency that oversees the site.
