Target and Walmart are among retailers recalling candy and snacks due to salmonella risk

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has upgraded a recall ordered in May due to concerns about salmonella contamination to Class I, the most urgent level.

According to Consumer Affairs, the recall was for Palmer Candy White Coated Confectionary Items that may have been contaminated with salmonella.

The recalled items were distributed to retailers such as Walmart, Target, Dollar General and HyVee, as well as wholesalers in several states, including Alabama, California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

According to the FDA’s website, the liquid coating on their candy may have been contaminated by an ingredient from one of their suppliers. To date, no illnesses have been reported related to the products.

The FDA issues a Class I recall in situations where “there is a reasonable probability that use of or contact with a violating product will cause serious health consequences or death,” its website states.

The first recall occurred on May 5, and production of the items was halted during the investigation.

The recalled products include Caramel Swirl Pretzels, Classic Yogurt Pretzels, Cookies & Cream Yummy Chow, Enrobed Pretzel Rods, Favorite Day Bakery White Fudge Mini Cookies, Frosted Munchy Medley Bowl, Frosted Patriot Frosted Pretzels, Frosted Pretzels, Munchy Medley, Patriotic Munchy Medley Bowl, Patriotic Pretzels, Patriotic Red, White & Blue Pretzel Twists and Patriotic Snack Mix.
