A homeless man who allegedly pointed a gun at several people at a Long Beach Metro A (Blue) Line station and threatened to shoot them — and then engaged police in a foot chase during which at least one officer shot at him — was ordered held without bail Thursday.
Tyrell Harris, 35, was being held without bail. Long Beach police said he suffered a gunshot wound to the upper body and was treated at a hospital before being medically evaluated and taken to jail.
According to Long Beach police, officers rushed to the station at the corner of Pacific Avenue and Fifth Street around 9:10 p.m. Wednesday where a man was brandishing a firearm on the subway platform. When they arrived, officers found the suspect, who immediately left the platform and ran away, according to Sergeant Bradford Stein.
Police said the suspect fled when officers arrived at the scene, leading to a chase during which Harris was shot by an officer. It was unclear what prompted the shooting, but police said no officers were injured.
Officers discovered a replica firearm at the scene, which was a functioning BB gun, as well as a carbon dioxide cartridge and BBs, police said.
Harris was arrested on suspicion of criminal threat, assault with a deadly weapon, obstruction of public order, display of a replica firearm and resisting arrest. He also had an outstanding warrant for another crime, police said.
