Smoke from Singapore Airlines plane leads to closure of runway at Japan’s Narita Airport

A report of white smoke rising from a landing Singapore Airlines plane forced a runway at JapanNarita Airport will be temporarily closed on Monday, officials said. However, emergency services found no signs of fire and no one was injured.

Because of the smoke, six fire trucks and two ambulances rushed to the scene. Narita Airport’s Runway B was closed from about 7:40 a.m. local time, shortly after the flight landed at the Tokyo gateway, airport and fire department officials said.

“We received a report that white smoke was coming from the left engine,” said a Narita City Fire Department official.

However, there were no signs of fire and no one was injured, she said, adding that firefighters left the scene after observing the plane for more than an hour.

There were 276 passengers and crew on board the plane, local media reported.

The plane reported the smoke to the airport after landing, an airport official said.

“It was reported that there may have been a problem during landing,” said a spokesman for Narita International Airport.

Tire fragments were found on the runway, the spokesman said. There was no further information about the incident.
