Shoppers are avoiding cheap vegetables at Walmart – so you should watch out too

Some consumers have recently expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of the store’s products.

Walmart customers know that generic or private label products can be a smart choice if they are not strictly tied to name-brand products because of cost. Many Great Value frozen vegetables can be found in the frozen food section. However, some consumers have recently expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of the store’s products. Let’s look at customer dissatisfaction with Walmart’s Great Value vegetables.

It started with broccoli that was frozen. In a TikTok video from March 26, user @teiseq opens a bag of Great Value Broccoli Florets. Instead of just small florets, she discovers a large frozen stalk. “Why would they give me this big (expletive) beanstalk?” she jokes while filming the frozen stalk without florets. In the comments, other TikTok users mentioned that the stalk probably took up most of the bag, and @teiseq confirmed this, saying, “It did!! I thought I had at least half a bag left and it’s this big branch.”

Other customers also reported this problem, proving that @teiseq wasn’t the only one. One customer said, “Never buy this brand of broccoli.” “One time I got a bag filled with just stems, no florets at all.” Another commenter said he stopped buying Great Value broccoli florets because of the same problem. “It’s always just stems,” he said. Another angry customer commented, “Great Value’s broccoli packages are always like this! It really annoys me.”

Other TikTok users also commented on the quality of Great Value’s frozen vegetables. One customer complained that onions and cauliflower often still had the skin on. “Walmart needs to improve their vegetable offerings!” After watching @teiseq’s video, someone commented, “They’re doing the same thing with cauliflower.” Another person claimed that there were quality issues with both Great Value’s frozen vegetable mix and Great Value’s frozen carrots. They said that one bag of mixed vegetables contained only one carrot and mostly green beans and corn, while the other bag labeled “carrots” contained peas. The customer concluded, “That’s why I had to stop shopping at Great Value.”

Another Walmart customer said he no longer buys Great Value frozen vegetables at all. “Walmart has been ripping people off with frozen vegetables for years. I switched to another brand; it’s not worth dealing with anymore,” he explained. This is not the first time Great Value has been criticized for its products. Some consumers seem to be suspicious of the Great Value name in general. Under @teiseq’s video, one commenter wrote, “This is what you get at Great Value!!! Avoid Walmart’s own brands, their quality is usually inferior.”

Customers raised concerns earlier this year about other Great Value products like cold cuts and bacon. Heather Lynne Foster (@heatherlynnefoster) weighs a package of Great Value Hickory Smoked Bacon labeled 12 ounces in a Feb. 13 TikTok video. But the bacon weighs just 7.90 ounces when she weighs it on her kitchen scale. Removed from the package, it weighs just 7.16 ounces.

Another user, @traveler_bex, posted a TikTok on Feb. 5 showing spoiled Great Value turkey breast packages on sale. “Look, it’s on sale. You know why? This is why,” Bex notes in the video as she holds up a two-pound Great Value turkey breast package, revealing white, black and blue spots on the side. “Mold. Mold in your turkey breast – on sale.”
