Sheriff’s deputy gives birth to baby while on duty

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Alabama (WBRC/Gray News) – An Alabama sheriff’s deputy is being honored after helping a woman deliver a baby in her home.

Sergeant Jeremy Barbin of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was working a crime scene when a man ran up to him and asked for help because his girlfriend was going into labor at her home.

When Barbin and the man arrived home, he immediately rushed to help deliver the baby and then took it to the hospital.

“When we entered the house, we noticed that labor had already started,” Barbin said. “We immediately intervened to help deliver the baby and safely unwrap the umbilical cord from the baby’s neck.”

The sheriff’s office told WBRC that they don’t typically receive training on how to deliver a baby, but officers are trained to be prepared for any situation.

Barbin says it is always an honor to take on this role, no matter what it is.

“Every day is different on our unit and you never know what to expect,” he said. “I’m grateful that we were in the right place at the right time to help deliver this baby safely and take the pressure off both mom and dad.”

Sheriff Mark Pettway says he is honored to have sergeants like Barbin in his office.

“Sgt. Barbin went above and beyond the call of duty and stepped into a situation where he easily could have waited for someone else,” said Sheriff Pettway. “He demonstrated his unwavering commitment to saving lives at a critical moment.”

Barbin will be awarded the Lifesaving Medal at the JCSO Academy graduation ceremony on Friday.
