Sheffield school board puts together take-home “homework boxes” for students

SHEFFIELD, Alabama (WAFF) – Every student in kindergarten through 12th grade will receive one of these.

Heather Collum, curriculum administrator for Sheffield City Schools, said they will include math flashcards, vocabulary flashcards, workbooks and textbooks.

It is grade-level specific. Currently, about 1,000 students attend the school system.

“If I had gotten this box as a student, I would have been in seventh heaven,” said Collum. “Because I could have practiced things at home and not needed much help. We don’t want anything to be frustrating. Anything that’s a repetition would have been phenomenal. And that’s what these boxes are: a repetition at home.”

Collum added that the boxes also give parents the opportunity to help their children at home.

She said this is partly to make learning fun for students, but also because they are aware that some families may not be able to afford to help their students.

“Learning is fun. And we want them to have that experience and not see it as another daunting task that you’re tired of. You just want something that’s engaging and fun at the same time. So flashcards, that’s fun.”

Collum said the system has ordered enough supplies to have those boxes again next year.
