September’s Supermoon Will Be a Partial Lunar Eclipse: What You Should Know

In September there is a new full moon, also called the “Harvest Moon,” as summer comes to an end and autumn begins.

Celebrity astrologer Kyle Thomas, known for his cosmic advice to celebrities, businesses and online influencers, spoke to Good Morning America about the best ways to use this powerful and emotional lunar event to your advantage.

In collaboration with the J. Paul Getty Museum, Thomas will participate in the Getty’s exhibition “Rising Signs: The Medieval Science of Astrology” and will take part in an online discussion on October 3 that will explore the connection between medieval astrology and popular contemporary practice. More information about the event can be found here.

But first let us clarify the meaning of the full moon.

When can you see the full moon?

According to NASA, the full moon in the United States will reach its brightest at 10:35 p.m. ET on Tuesday, September 17.

The moon will appear full for about three days, from Monday evening to Thursday morning, the agency said, adding that the full moon will also include a partial lunar eclipse.

What is a lunar eclipse?

A lunar eclipse is a natural phenomenon that occurs when the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon. This causes the Earth’s shadow to fall on the Moon, making it appear darker and reddish.

During this special event, which occurs during the full moon, the moon will begin to enter Earth’s partial shadow at 8:41 p.m. ET and full shadow at 10:13 p.m., according to NASA.

The moon will leave the full shadow at 11:16 p.m. and the partial shadow at 12:47 a.m. on Wednesday morning.

The full moon is also a supermoon

This year’s September full moon is also known as a supermoon. It occurs when the moon is at or near the closest point in its orbit, making the full moon appear significantly brighter and larger than usual.

Why is it called Harvest Moon?

The Old Farmer’s Almanac, which first published the names of full moons in the 1930s, says that the full moon got its name “Harvest Moon” because it rises shortly after sunset on several evenings, so that there is an abundance of bright moonlight shortly after nightfall.

This time became a common time for farmers to help with the harvest.

The Harvest Moon can occur in September or October, depending on its proximity to the autumn equinox.

Another full moon that could also occur in September is the so-called Corn Moon. According to NASA, it marks the harvest time of the most important staple crops: corn, pumpkins, squash, beans and wild rice.

What zodiac sign does the full moon in September have?

The zodiac sign for each full moon is determined by the moon’s position in the night sky in relation to the various astrological signs. According to Thomas, the moon shifts every year, resulting in different features around the moon.

This year, the full moon is a lunar eclipse in Pisces, a water sign and the 12th and final zodiac sign on the wheel. It lies on the opposite axis of the earth sign Virgo.

“This means that both signs are connected to our health – physical or mental – as well as to the physical or spiritual world,” said Thomas. “This duality grounds us in the practical while opening us to the divine.”

Rituals and manifestations you can try during the full moon

The Harvest Moon, the full moon in September this year, is also a partial lunar eclipse and will occur on September 17, 2024.

Many ancient cultures and religions celebrate celestial cycles and find ways to honor and utilize the power of the full moon.

To make the most of this intense energy, many astrologers believe that a full moon is a great time to pursue your dreams.

Thomas said it is not recommended to manifest during a lunar eclipse because the energy is “incredibly chaotic, intense and highly evolved.”

“Lunar eclipses are three times more powerful and emotional than full moons,” he added.

Thomas recommends asking yourself and the universe questions in order to use this energy even more effectively.

Possible meditations, mantras or diary entries:

  • How can I surrender to the flow of the universe?
  • How can I trust the natural rhythm of life and move gracefully?
  • How can I get rid of my fears, inhibitions, traumas and addictions?
  • How can I bring my mind to the highest vibration?
