Seniors in Abingdon and Washington County, Virginia, are working toward a new future.

“We are doing well,” Richard Denzau said at the Washington County Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday.

A seniors group is currently in the process of incorporating Abingdon–Washington County Senior Services, Inc., Denzau said.

And that group hopes to use Abingdon’s former passenger station as its new headquarters after relocating from the now-closed Abingdon Seniors’ Center.

“We haven’t been to the senior center for a few years,” Denzau said. “In fact, we were removed from the senior center once not too long ago.”

This group hosts activities for seniors ages 60 and older, including weekly meetings with speakers, monthly social events with cakewalks and bingo games, and two major field trips a year to places like the Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theater in Wytheville.

The group will focus on volunteerism and will work with the Third District Government Cooperative, he said. The proposed motto is “Seniors Helping Seniors.”

Currently, the group meets at the Oddfellows’ McCabe Lodge behind Dollar General on the west end of Abingdon, he said.
