Selena Gomez made a perfect political reference at the 2024 Emmys on Sunday night.
The singer and actor made a joke about “childless cat ladies,” apparently in reference to Republican Senator JD Vance’s now widely ridiculed remarks disparaging women without children.
During an appearance onstage with her “Only Murders in the Building” co-stars Martin Short and Steve Martin, Gomez laughed uncontrollably as Martin and Short playfully threw heads at each other.
The singer then joined the conversation and talked about what she loves about her co-stars.
“I want to emphasize what an honor it is to work with two men who are far from being childless cat ladies,” she said. (Watch the video here.)
Actress Candice Bergen also made fun of Vance’s comments during the ceremony.
When accepting an award, Bergen reiterated how then-Vice President Dan Quayle criticized her character in the 1992 series “Murphy Brown,” a woman who consciously decided to raise a baby alone.
“Oh, how far we’ve come. Today, a Republican vice presidential candidate would never attack a woman for having children,” Bergen said on stage. “So, as they say, my work here is done. Meow.”
Vance, former President Donald Trump’s vice presidential candidate for the 2024 election, has faced heavy criticism for comments he made in a resurfaced 2021 interview.
In that interview, he mocked Vice President Kamala Harris, today’s Democratic presidential candidate, calling her one of those “childless cat ladies” who are “unhappy” with their lives and yet still run the country.
The Ohio senator was sharply criticized and pointed out that there are many reasons why a woman might not have children or might choose not to have children. (Harris has two stepchildren, Ella and Cole Emhoff.)

In an interview with Vanity Fair last week, Gomez announced that she was unable to carry her own children for medical reasons.
The actress, who has spoken publicly about living with lupus and bipolar disorder, told the magazine she was “grateful” for the opportunity to explore other ways to become a mother in the future, such as adoption or surrogacy.
Gomez’s best friend, pop star Taylor Swift, sparked a media frenzy last week when she endorsed Harris for president in a social media statement.
Swift captioned the post “Childless Cat Lady.”
