Selena Gomez calls Steve Martin and Martin Short “childless cat ladies” at the 2024 Emmys

Selena Gomez gave a shoutout to her best friend Taylor Swift at the 2024 Emmy Awards.

The 32-year-old actress presented the first award of the evening together with her Only murders in the building Co-stars Martin Short and Steve Martin. When Short, 74, and Martin, 79, bemoaned each other’s age, Gomez chimed in with a fitting dig.

“Steve, let me tell you what an honor it is to work with someone who looks like he fell down and can’t get up,” Short joked, to which Martin hit back, saying, “And let me tell you what an honor it is for me to work with someone who looks like a former tennis champion.”

Gomez then joked, “And let me tell you, what an honor it is to work with two men who are so far from being childless cat ladies.”

The comment comes after Swift, 34, endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president following her debate against Donald Trump on September 10. Swift signed the endorsement with “childless cat lady,” referring to Trump’s vice presidential nominee JD Vance, who had previously used that term for 59-year-old Harris.

Vance’s comments sparked a fierce reaction at the time. After Swift mentioned the nickname in her Instagram post, Harris’s vice presidential candidate Tim Walz proudly referred to himself as a “fellow cat owner” and thanked the pop star for his support.

After the joke, which appeared to refer to Swift’s support of Harris, Gomez’s co-stars shouted that this was her first time being nominated at the show, to which she asked if it was “embarrassing” that they were both nominated in the same category and technically competing against each other.

“I don’t think so. I mean, Steve and I obviously both voted for you,” Short said.

“And Marty and I agreed, in fairness, that we would both vote for each other,” said Martin – but when his co-star asked him who he had actually voted for, he remained silent.

“But the Emmys aren’t about who wins or who loses,” Gomez interjected, which made Short and Martin laugh.

“Oh! You’re young!” Short said to her.

“Honestly, do you see what I have to go through every day?” Gomez asked the crowd before the trio presented the Emmy for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. The bear‘s Ebon Moss-Bachrach.
