Week 1 of the college football season is over and it has shown that the SEC is still the conference to survive in 2024.

Georgia, ranked No. 1 in the top 25 polls in the preseason, got the job done against No. 14 Clemson, beating the Tigers 34-3 in Atlanta and reaffirming that it is the team to beat this college football season.

Quarterback Nico Iamaleava impressed in his first regular season game for No. 15 Tennessee. The 6-foot-6 quarterback orchestrated an explosive day for the Vols offense, which totaled 717 yards of offense in a 69-3 win over Chattanooga. Iamaleava completed 22 of 28 passes for 314 yards and three touchdowns.

Thanks to big debuts from rookie wide receiver Ryan Williams and safety Keon Sabb, who transferred from Michigan, No. 5 Alabama beat Western Kentucky 63-0 in Kalen DeBoer’s first game as coach of the Crimson Tide after taking over from Nick Saban.

Another storyline from Week 1 within the SEC is Vanderbilt’s upset 34-27 overtime win over Virginia Tech of the ACC. Elsewhere, No. 4 Texas, No. 6 Ole Miss and No. 11 Missouri all shut out their opponents in Week 1. Arch Manning threw his first touchdown with the Longhorns in Texas’ 52-0 victory over Colorado State.

Things weren’t always perfect for the SEC in Week 1. No. 12 LSU lost to No. 23 USC on Sunday and No. 20 Texas A&M lost a home game to No. 7 Notre Dame in College Station. Then there was Florida, which suffered a 41-17 loss to rival Miami in Gainesville.
