Search warrant seeks to link dead person to ‘circumstances’ of Asha Degrees’ disappearance

SHELBY, NC (WBTV) – The attorney for the man whose home was searched by federal agents in Cleveland County earlier this week in connection with the disappearance of Asha Degree said his client denies knowing anything about Asha Degree’s fate.

David R. Teddy, representing Roy Lee Dedmon, said the search warrant for Dedmon’s Cherryville Road property will result in someone who is no longer alive being linked to the circumstances of Degree’s disappearance.

Degree, who was 9 years old at the time of her disappearance in February 2000.

“It’s quite possible that the person who is no longer with us has the answer to what happened to Asha. It’s quite possible that that answer will never be known,” Teddy said.

Teddy spoke to reporters Friday night, hoping to dispel rumors circulating in Cleveland County about the case and Dedmon, whose Shelby home was searched by FBI agents on Tuesday and Wednesday. “As an attorney and as a citizen of this community, I am disturbed by the information that has been put out there,” Teddy said. “I am concerned not only for my client Roy Dedmon and his family, but more importantly, I am concerned for the Degree family. I don’t know Asha’s parents personally, but I know some of her relatives and they are good, honest, decent people. And they deserve better than what some people in this community have done to them recently.”

Dedmon, along with his wife and three children, were questioned by authorities about Degree’s disappearance, and according to Teddy, they all denied knowing anything.

The search warrant could be released as early as this week, Teddy said.
