School and university closures in Central Florida

ORLANDO, Fla. – Hurricane Milton is heading toward Central Florida and is expected to strengthen into a major hurricane.

Here are Central Florida school districts’ responses and updates ahead of the storm

Brevard County

All Brevard Public Schools and offices will be closed on Wednesday, October 10th and Thursday, October 10th.

Flagler County

There is no information available yet.

Lake County

Lake County Public Schools will be open Monday, October 7th. The district will announce any changes to school operations due to Hurricane Milton on Monday. The announcement will be communicated directly to parents via email and phone call. It will also be posted on district and school websites as well as official district and school social media pages.

Marion County

Due to Hurricane Milton, MCPS will be closed on Wednesday, October 9th and Thursday, October 10th. All extracurricular extracurricular activities on Tuesday, October 8th are also canceled.

Polk County

In response to this storm, all PCPS schools and offices will be closed on Tuesday, October 8, Wednesday, October 9, and Thursday, October 10.

Orange County

We continue to monitor and track Hurricane Milton. County leaders met to discuss preparations for the storm’s impact on Orange County. The OCPS Safety & Emergency Management team coordinates operations with the Orange County Office of Emergency Management and other local officials to ensure the school district’s decision-making is consistent with our partners.

We will provide another update on possible school closures and cancellation of extracurricular activities on Monday.

OCPS will continue to communicate all updates via phone calls, emails and text messages, as well as posts on our social media pages and ocps.net.

Osceola County

Classes will be held on Monday, October 7th and Tuesday, October 8th

  • All extracurricular activities, events and athletics at all schools will take place as normal on Monday but are canceled for Tuesday.

  • The district’s extended day/learning program will operate as usual on Mondays and Tuesdays.

  • The Osceola County School Board workshop and board meeting scheduled to take place on Tuesday, October 8th has been canceled. The Osceola County School Board’s next meeting will be Tuesday, Oct. 22.

  • All Osceola schools will be closed Wednesday, October 9th due to Hurricane Milton.

Seminole County

We are working closely with Seminole County FL Emergency Management to monitor weather conditions due to Tropical Storm Milton. We will provide updates as more information becomes available.

Sumter County

There is no information available yet.

Volusia County

At this time, all extracurricular activities are canceled except for extended day enrichment programs on Monday, October 7th.

VCS will provide more information about possible school closures on Monday following our morning briefing with Volusia County Emergency Management.

Universities and colleges

Rollins College

Based on the current Hurricane Milton forecast, all in-person classes and events are canceled October 7-11. Residence hall students must evacuate campus and follow their hurricane/emergency evacuation plan. Campus closes on October 8th at 5:00 p.m.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

Due to Hurricane Milton, all classes and events at Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach Campus will be closed October 8-10. We encourage students to prioritize safety, inform families of travel plans, and stay up to date with campus notifications.

Florida Tech

The university’s residence halls will remain open throughout the week. The current expectation is that students will be housed in on-site residence halls.

Normal operations are planned and all classes will meet as scheduled on Monday, October 7th and Tuesday morning, October 8th.

Classes will be canceled beginning Tuesday, October 8th at 12 p.m. to allow the campus community to prepare for the storm. Classes will be canceled all day on Wednesday, October 9th. Classes will be canceled on Thursday, October 10th, at least until noon.

Classes are scheduled to resume virtually on Thursday, October 10 at 12 p.m. Classes will be held virtually on Thursday afternoon and all day on Friday, October 11th.

University offices will close at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, October 8th and will remain closed on Wednesday, October 9th. The offices are expected to reopen on Thursday, October 10th at 12 p.m.

University events will be canceled starting Tuesday, October 8th at 12:00 p.m. and are expected to resume on Thursday afternoon, October 10th.
