VENICE – Sarasota County has closed all access to Caspersen Beach Park effective Wednesday due to significant damage to Harbor Drive South from the storm surge of Tropical Storm Debby on Aug. 4.
The storm damaged part of the road north of the entrance.
Officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Sarasota County assessed damage to roads and beaches during the week of August 12-16.
On Wednesday, Sarasota County closed access to Caspersen Beach from the Venetian Waterway Park Trail along the Intracoastal Waterway, as well as all facilities within the park.
According to a Sarasota County press release, the park will remain closed until further notice and no timeline for road repairs has been set.
In contrast, Humphris Park at the South Jetty in Venice reopened on August 15 after repairs to the parking lot.
The South Jetty walkway will remain closed while the City of Venice and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers coordinate a schedule for repairs.
