Sarasota County calls for Level A and B evacuation

SARASOTA COUNTY UTILITIES UPDATE:

“On Tuesday, October 8, at 10 a.m., Sarasota County Public Utilities will begin shutting down drinking water supplies and wastewater lift stations to our customers on Siesta Key and Casey Key. This precautionary measure protects community infrastructure that may be subject to flooding due to storm surge and strong winds.

Sarasota County Public Utilities team members are prepared to respond when conditions are safe and restore water service to those affected. As a reminder, once potable water supplies are restored, these areas will be subject to a boil water advisory. Please stay informed through our social media channels, local news channels and by visiting scgov.net or by calling 311 or 941-861-5000.”

Evacuations:

Sarasota County is requesting the evacuation of Levels A and B, as well as any industrial development or a mobile home or boathouse – EVACUATE. Level C individuals should be prepared to evacuate if the storm intensifies. To find out your level, visit the Know Your Evacuation Level website: www.scgov.net/beprepared (scgov.net).

Sandbag operations:

Sarasota County residents will be offered self-service sandbags on Tuesday, October 8, from 8 a.m. to noon at the following locations:

  • Ed Smith Stadium, 2700 12th St., Sarasota.
  • Twin Lakes Park, 6700 Clark Road, Sarasota.
  • South County Fleet Services, 4571 SR 776/Englewood Road, Venice.

Residents are limited to 10 pieces of luggage per vehicle. Bags and sand will be provided. Individuals are asked to bring their shovels.

Transit:

Breeze Transit services, including fixed route, OnDemand and Siesta Key Trolley, will be closed Tuesday, October 8th. Breeze Plus only accepts medically necessary trips and uses all available resources to evacuate people.
All Breeze Transit services will be closed on Wednesday, October 9th.

Sarasota County says they will require Level A evacuations and possibly Level A and B evacuations in advance of Hurricane Milton.

Rich Collins, the director of emergency services, said in a YouTube post on Sunday that the county would be calling for evacuations starting tomorrow (Monday).

The district sent out the following notice regarding sandbags:

Sandbag locations open Monday from 8 a.m

Sarasota County residents will be offered self-service sandbags on Monday, October 7th from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the following locations:

  • Ed Smith Stadium, 2700 12th St.
  • Twin Lakes Park, 6700 Clark Road, Sarasota
  • South County Fleet Services, 4571 SR 776/Englewood Road, Venice

Residents are limited to 10 pieces of luggage per vehicle.

The City of Venice will be at 252 Seaboard Ave. on Monday, October 7th starting at 8 a.m. open their self-service sandbag station to residents. BOTH SAND AND BAGS ARE AVAILABLE AT THE SEABOARD LOCATION, and the location will remain open after 5 p.m. Monday while supplies last. Sandbags are available on a first come, first served basis. Shovels are provided. Limit 10 pieces of luggage per vehicle.

Self-service sandbag stations are also available in the City of North Port at the Larry Thoennissen Athletic Fields behind the George Mullen Activity Center, 1602 Kramer Way. Bags and sand are available while supplies last, with a limit of 10 bags per vehicle. Residents are asked to bring their own shovels.

Roadside collection and debris update

Sarasota County crews are laser-focused on removing Hurricane Helene’s roadside debris and materials from our Level A communities.

For common areas that do not meet Evacuation Level A, all regular trash, yard waste and bulk collections are suspended until Wednesday, October 9th. Do not leave materials for curbside collection.

Conditions will be assessed to determine when regular pickups will resume after Wednesday, October 9th.

All recycling collections are suspended until the week of October 11th.

District landfill operations

To help our community expedite storm debris removal before Hurricane Milton’s potential landfall, Sarasota County is offering community members in previously identified unincorporated county areas the opportunity to move debris from their properties to the county landfill without a fee. All Central County Landfill disposal areas are open* Monday, October 7th and Tuesday, October 8th:

  • Monday, October 7th, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m
  • Tuesday, October 8th, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m

*Customers unloading manually must arrive at least 30 minutes before closing time. The corresponding disposal fees apply. Customers must expect longer waiting times and please be patient.
