The New Orleans Saints engaged in a number of position battles during the offseason, most of which were already clearly decided before kickoff of Week 1 against the Carolina Panthers.
One such battle, however, was still undecided, namely the one for backup quarterback. The rankings still showed Jake Haener versus Spencer Rattler as an “or.” Ultimately, the choice was made before the game, with Haener taking second place and Rattler initially inactive. He will continue to wear his uniform as the third emergency quarterback.
Rattler is the emergency QB, meaning he must be part of the 53-man roster on game days (which was expected anyway). Dennis Allen has said the position will remain flexible this season and the two have been spreading out workouts throughout the week. This decision comes as a bit of a surprise, as many fans believed Rattler performed better than Haener over the summer. However, Haener has an extra season of workouts with the team, which may have played a role in the decision.
