Russell Wilson remains inactive and will be the Steelers’ emergency QB

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson is officially inactive for Sunday night’s game against the Dallas Cowboys, serving as the team’s No. 3/emergency quarterback.

This means his status does not change as Wilson continues to serve as the team’s No. 3/emergency quarterback since he has played the last four games due to his calf injury. Wilson will take off but won’t play unless starter Justin Fields and backup Kyle Allen are injured.

Some had speculated that Wilson could be the No. 2 quarterback this week, but that will have to wait at least another week. He first injured his calf in July before aggravating it during a Thursday practice 72 hours before Week 1.

Russell Wilson increased his reps in practice this week, telling reporters he did some 11-on-11 reps, but his official status remained the same. He was listed as limited on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and ended the week as questionable. Wilson also indicated that he had not yet been fully cleared, at least not at the time of his media session on Thursday.

Still the No. 3 quarterback, this suggests the Steelers are using his health to dictate their quarterback pecking order. That would have changed if Wilson had been the No. 2 quarterback, an acknowledgment that he was healthy enough to play, but Fields would start.

Fields played well in relief, leading the Steelers to a 3-1 start. He will look to continue tonight and could secure his starting spot with a strong performance and a win even if Wilson is deemed healthy in Week 6 against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Along with Russell Wilson, WR Roman Wilson is inactive tonight. Neither has dressed this season. RB Jaylen Warren (knee), EDGE Alex Highsmith (groin) and RB/KR Cordarrelle Patterson (ankle) are also notable inactives for today’s game. The new OL Max Scharping is also inactive.

Pittsburgh and Dallas begin at 8:20 pm/EST on NBC.
