Report: Steelers have held trade talks with Raiders for Davante Adams

Not only are the Pittsburgh Steelers interested in WR Davante Adams, they are also actively talking to the Las Vegas Raiders about a trade. According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the Steelers and Raiders have been in talks and maintain “an open line of communication” about a potential deal.

There are no details on how far these discussions have progressed, and it’s common for teams to ask. This certainly does not mean that a trade is imminent or guaranteed to occur. But it’s another sign that Pittsburgh will try to land Adams, a top wide receiver and one of the league’s most productive over the past few seasons.

Other reports suggest the Steelers are not alone. The New York Jets and New Orleans Saints are possible destinations and are preferable to Adams, who could reunite with QB Aaron Rodgers or Derek Carr. But Pittsburgh could offer a chance to win and get to the playoffs. Adams has not had team success since joining the Raiders before the 2022 season. In his first season there he was 6:11 and 8:9 in 2023. Adams has not won a playoff game since the 2020 season.

Of course, Pittsburgh has had its own problems in the postseason, failing to secure a victory since 2016. Adding Davante Adams would help end that drought and give the Steelers two No. 1-caliber wide receivers in the six-time Pro Bowler and George Pickens. Although wide receivers like Calvin Austin III and Scotty Miller have played this year, they can’t be counted on to be a consistent No. 2 and they don’t come close to the talent that Adams brings.

While Russini’s report is noteworthy, it also points out that the Jets are considered the league-wide frontrunners. They could use a receiver opposite Garrett Wilson, and with Rodgers at quarterback and a strong defense, acquiring Adams could make them serious contenders.

Pittsburgh will face the Raiders and Jets in consecutive weeks and travel to Las Vegas in Week 6 before hosting the Jets on Sunday Night Football the following week.

A team has to offer enough draft capital to entice the Raiders to part with Adams, and the Steelers could still trade him if they have a chance to win in Pittsburgh. It’s a situation worth keeping an eye on leading up to the NFL trade deadline, which has been pushed back an additional week this season to November 5th at 4:00 p.m./EST.
