Reds place Andrew Abbott on the injured list and call up Alan Busenitz

The Cincinnati Reds made three changes to the roster this afternoon before their game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Left-handed starting pitcher Andrew Abbott was placed on the 15-day injured list with a left shoulder injury. This change is retroactive to August 20. They expanded the 40-man roster and called up right-handed reliever Alan Busenitz. To free up a spot on the 40-man roster, the team moved catcher Austin Wynns from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day injured list.

The loss of Andrew Abbott to injury is another blow to a team currently dealing with a lot of injured pitchers. Right-handed pitcher Hunter Greene was placed on the injured list earlier this month. He’s also been missing Brandon Williamson all season, and Graham Ashcraft was also placed on the injured list six weeks ago. The bullpen has also been dealing with a lot of injuries, reducing the pitching depth the club might have had.

Alan Busenitz signed with the Reds in January 2023 after playing pitcher in Japan for four years. He reached the major leagues with the Reds later that season, posting a 2.57 ERA in 7.0 innings for Cincinnati. He was a free agent after the year, but re-signed with the club in January, signing a minor league contract.

He has spent the entire season in Triple-A as a pitcher for Louisville. With the Bats, he has thrown 55.0 innings with a 3.93 ERA, allowing 18 walks and 51 strikeouts. Since June 30, he has pitched in 15 games and allowed five runs in 19.1 innings (2.33 ERA) with 16 strikeouts.

Austin Wynns has been on the injured list since July 29 with a torn right teres major muscle. With his move to the 60-day injured list, it looks like he will be out for the rest of the season.
