Reds place All-Star starter Hunter Greene on injured list due to elbow soreness

CINCINNATI – Hunter Greene, the Cincinnati Reds’ All-Star starter, was placed on the injured list Saturday because of soreness in his right elbow.

Greene felt the pain in his elbow while playing catch before the Reds’ home game against the Kansas City Royals on Saturday. He had reported some discomfort after Tuesday’s win, but told the team it had disappeared by Saturday.

Greene, 9-4 with a 2.83 ERA, was scheduled to start Monday in Toronto. No announcement was made as to who would start Monday.

Greene, 25, underwent Tommy John surgery in 2019. The Reds have not yet received an MRI but expect one in the next few days, said Nick Krall, the team’s president of baseball operations.

“I don’t want to speculate about anything at the moment,” Krall said. “We’ll do an MRI and have the doctor examine him, and then we’ll see.”

The move is retroactive to Wednesday, August 14. A move can only be made retroactively for a maximum of four days, so placing him on the injured list on Saturday and playing with a 25-man roster could allow him to return sooner than if the team waited a day.

Greene, the second overall pick in the 2017 draft, was selected to his first All-Star Game this year and has positioned himself as the leading candidate for the National League Cy Young Award. In five starts since the All-Star break, Greene is 3-0 with a 1.09 ERA. His 5.5 Baseball-Reference WAR leads all National League pitchers.
