Rece Hinds called up, Reds put Stuart Fairchild on the IL

It was a day of roster moves for the Cincinnati Reds, and about two hours before first pitch tonight, they made another one, recalling outfielder Rece Hinds from Triple-A and placing outfielder Stuart Fairchild on the injured list with a sprained left thumb. In addition, the club already placed Nick Lodolo on the injured list today, recalled Casey Legumina, and sent Brandon Williamson back to Triple-A to begin a rehab program.

Rece Hinds will return to the major leagues. The rookie outfielder had a better first week than anyone in the history of the game. Hinds played in seven games in the final week of the first half before the All-Star break, hitting .423/.464/1.192 with three doubles, one triple, five home runs and 11 runs batted in. That performance earned him National League Player of the Week honors.

When the team returned from the All-Star break, things didn’t go so well, as he went 1-12 in three games before being sent back to Triple-A. Things haven’t really gone well in Louisville since his return, either. In 22 games, he posted a batting average of .179/.255/.262 with one home run and 34 strikeouts in 94 at-bats.

Stuart Fairchild will be out until at least September. His placement on the 10-day injured list is retroactive to Monday. This means the earliest he could return to Cincinnati’s active roster is September 5, when the Reds host the Houston Astros in an afternoon game.

Cincinnati’s injured list is almost as long as their active roster. The team has 10 pitchers on the 40-man roster who are on either the major league injured list or the minor league injured list. They also have eight outfielders on the 40-man roster who are on the major league or minor league injured list.
