Radford continues development plans for new business park in West End

RADFORD, Va. (WDBJ) – The Old Foundry, now known as West Radford Commerce Park, was Radford’s century-old iron and coal industrial site that closed in 2013.

The 80-acre property was virtually untouched until the city purchased it last August with big plans to create more businesses and jobs and revitalize the community’s west end.

Economic Development Director Kim Repass said they are working to find a large manufacturing company, such as a water or electricity consumer, to take over.

“This property is close to the railroad, close to Interstate 81 and 77. We have talent pools from the various universities in our area. This is a great benefit to our community as we move forward with redevelopment,” Repass said.

With the help of extensive environmental studies and a new $3.5 million corporate grant, the city is beginning to turn its vision into reality.

“It involves removing soil that has contaminated a small area on this property. It also involves removing a concrete slab that is about 18,500 square meters in size,” Repass said.

By building a large business park, city officials also hope to attract new shops and restaurants.

“We hope that the revitalization of this property will create additional jobs. It will bring additional restaurants and diverse businesses to the West End area of our community,” Repass said.

The soil removal process is scheduled to be completed in early 2025.

Although there is still much work to be done, the city hopes to have the park ready for industrial use by 2026.
