KANSAS CITY, Missouri (KCTV) — Several area restaurants and businesses have been burglarized in recent weeks, leaving business owners in an uproar and wondering what the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department is doing about it.
At the same time, illegal street racing and carnival events take place in downtown Kansas City, where drivers perform illegal maneuvers on the city’s streets every night.
Mayor Quinton Lucas addressed the issues on social media on Saturday, saying he wanted to make businesses and people feel safe working in Kansas City.
“For victims, there is no such thing as ‘petty crime,'” Lucas told KCTV5 on Saturday. “Robberies, burglaries, vandalism and more are something we will never accept in Kansas City.”
Lucas believes that the crime wave in the city must come to an end.
“Prevention, accountability and making sure the people of Kansas City know that we all care are things I will work with the police department on to make sure we don’t hear the same stories as we did earlier this week.”
Another issue the mayor wants to address is street racing and illegal sideshows. Lucas says the city is considering a law that would allow people to take away their vehicles if they are caught racing, doing donuts or engaging in other illegal activities that are common in downtown KC.
“We’re very close on that,” Lucas said. “I think this drug is legal in Missouri. I think that’s something we need to do more of. I think we need to make it clear to the people who are causing trouble and acting like idiots all over town that this is completely unacceptable.”
Lucas stressed that he and the KCPD are concerned about any crime, regardless of size or severity. He says he has heard the community’s calls for something to change.
“I think most Kansas City residents are saying, ‘We’ve heard enough. We’ve seen enough and we’re sick of people’s nights being disrupted, of their businesses being disrupted and of the violent crime that goes along with it.’ We’re going to make a change here.”
