Purdue legend Gene Keady suffers health scare, expected to make a full recovery

Legendary Purdue basketball coach Gene Keady suffered a health scare last week but is expected to make a full recovery. The legendary Boilermaker coach’s family released a statement on his health Monday.

“Coach suffered a mild stroke last week and is making good progress in rehab. He is expected to make a full recovery,” the family said, according to Alan Karpick of GoldandBlack.com. “And we thank everyone for their condolences.”

According to the Purdue men’s basketball team’s social media page, Keady was hospitalized and transferred to a rehabilitation facility.

Keady coached at Purdue from 1980 to 2005, compiling a 512-270 record during his time in West Lafayette. He led the Boilermakers to six Big Ten regular season championships and 17 NCAA Tournament appearances. Keady was named Big Ten Coach of the Year seven times in his career and was National Coach of the Year six times.

Keady has received many accolades in recent years, most notably a spot in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2023.

Although he hasn’t coached the Boilermakers in two decades, he remains involved with the program, leading the team to the National Championship Game last season.

“He was a Hall of Fame coach, accomplished all of that and helped all of the people he supported, but he didn’t make it to the Final Four,” Purdue coach Matt Painter said. “For him to be a part of that is his program. We can’t mess that up.”

“He’s done so much for Purdue, he’s done so much for our community and for our basketball program. For him to be able to experience that with us, our players and our fans, it was really cool. Being able to share that with him was one of the highlights of my career.”
