Predictions for the 2025 Oscars:
Best Film

Art Streiber for Variety

Weekly Commentary (Updated August 22, 2024): The first two major fall festivals – Venice and Telluride – kick off the awards season next week, offering first glimpses of the major films vying for the attention of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

One of the most eagerly awaited films is Todd Phillips’ musical sequel “Joker: Folie à Deux”, which features the cover of diversity this week. Phillips spoke with Brent Lang, diversity Editor in Chief, about the film, which is set to premiere on September 4. The film, which follows its 2019 predecessor, which received 11 Oscar nominations and won two, including Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix, could be a serious contender for its distributor Warner Bros. However, the studio must juggle other high-profile sequels, including Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune 2,” Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” George Miller’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and the animated film “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.”

Venice will also see the premieres of Halina Reijn’s “Babygirl” with Nicole Kidman, Justin Kurzel’s “The Order” with Jude Law and Pedro Almodóvar’s “The Room Next Door” with Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton.

Telluride will host the world premieres of Edward Berger’s thriller “Conclave,” starring Ralph Fiennes, and Malcolm Washington’s adaptation of August Wilson’s play “The Piano Lesson,” starring Samuel L. Jackson. Another film worth seeing is RaMell Ross’ drama “Nickel Boys,” which is said to be a striking adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s novel. Telluride is also expected to have a wide selection of music-centric films on its schedule, which will be announced on Thursday, August 29. These include Michael Gracey’s “Better Man,” starring Robbie Williams, Morgan Neville’s animated biopic “Piece by Piece,” about Pharrell Williams, and Joshua Oppenheimer’s post-apocalyptic film “The End,” starring Tilda Swinton and Michael Shannon.
