Popular Mediterranean and Spanish restaurant closes in Oakland

Last call at Shakewell Restaurant, an Oakland restaurant whose cuisine combines Mediterranean and Spanish flavors.

The owners made the announcement on social media on Saturday, saying they would close at the end of the month.

The owners say their bar will remain open for now despite the restaurant closure.

“We have made the heartbreaking decision to close Shakewell Restaurant… we have endured so many challenges and were determined to keep this place alive, but the reality of these times has caught up with us,” the restaurant said.

The restaurant opened on Lakeshore in 2014 and was known for its handcrafted cocktails and small plates.

Although the restaurant did not go into detail, it said that despite all efforts, it was “no longer able to keep up with the numbers.”

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, rising costs and falling sales forced the restaurant to close.

“This is not the outcome any of us wanted. We fought so hard because Shakewell was a home, a gathering place, a special little corner of the world where we could all come together… the thought of having to close our doors is truly devastating. But we have reached a point where we have no other choice,” the restaurant said.

Reservations for her restaurant can be made until August 31st and Shakewell invites the public to have one last meal there before closing.
