Police take action against nitrous oxide sales in Pattaya nightclubs

Pattaya police explain to an employee at a nightclub on Walking Street that the aim of the inspection is to combat the recreational abuse of laughing gas, which has become popular among teenagers and tourists.

Bangkok, Thailand – On August 17, Pattaya police launched an operation against the illegal sale of nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas. The raid, led by Colonel Pattanapong Sripinproh, head of Section 2 of the Anti-Human Trafficking Department, involved senior officials and a joint task force from the Pattaya Tourist Police and Pattaya Police Station.

“Our aim is to combat the illegal sale of nitrous oxide and address the serious health risks associated with its misuse,” Colonel Pattanapong explained. The operation focused on nightclubs and bars along Pattaya’s famous Walking Street. Police visited several establishments to inform business owners of the legal penalties for selling nitrous oxide and to warn them of the serious health risks. “Nitrous oxide can cause significant damage to the nervous system and brain and can be fatal in extreme cases,” he added.

During the raid, authorities revisited a clandestine bar that had previously been raided for selling nitrous oxide. Although the shop was still open, it was found to be selling only cannabis-based products. The back room, where illegal activity had previously taken place, was now sealed off and no evidence of nitrous oxide or other illegal substances was found.

The operation was part of a nationwide directive issued by Lt. Gen. Jiraphop Phuridech, Commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB). “This directive aims to combat the recreational abuse of nitrous oxide, which despite its medicinal use has become popular among teenagers and tourists due to its psychoactive effects,” Colonel Pattanapong explained. “Inhaling large quantities can cause nausea, unconsciousness and even death, which is why we are enforcing a strict ban on its sale in Pattaya’s entertainment venues.”
