A Georgia man was shot and killed by police on Sunday after he was seen brandishing a firearm near a gas station in Athens, authorities said.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Athens-Clarke County police responded to the intersection of Lexington Road and Gaines School Road around 1:20 a.m. Sunday for a report of a man brandishing a “machine gun.”

When officers arrived, they saw the suspect, identified as 26-year-old Marquavious Sims, inside a Verizon store before crossing the street into the parking lot of a QuickTrip gas station.

Sims was pursued by officers and ordered to drop the weapon. At some point during the brief chase, however, Sims fired the weapon at the pursuing officers. Two officers returned fire, hitting the suspect multiple times.
