Police identify man for cash register theft

TOWN OF LERAY, N.Y. (WWNY) – If you saw $60 left at the self-checkout counter, would you take it?

The state police accuse a man of exactly this.

According to police, the man in the photo above was caught on camera at around 12:40 p.m. on August 11 as he left the Walmart Super Center on Route 11 in the town of LeRay.

According to police, he left the store after taking $60 in cash, which was dispensed from a self-checkout machine to a previous customer who had forgotten to take the money.

After asking the public for help in identifying the man, state police said they had arrested 58-year-old Michael Zimmerman of LaFargeville in connection with the crime.

He is accused of petty theft.

7 News wanted to learn more about the incident and asked state police to shed some more light on the matter.

According to police, the customer realized he had forgotten the money and went back to get it.

After the customer couldn’t find it, he asked Walmart for help.

According to police, surveillance video showed the suspect grabbing the cash within seconds of the customer walking away and apparently hiding it.

The customer notified the police.

According to police, Zimmerman turned himself in after police released the photo of him.
