Pleasant autumnal weather awaits you in Massachusetts

Apparently it’s that time of year already, so grab a washcloth and…does anyone smell the pumpkin spice smell?

A “poorly forecast” storm that settled over Connecticut over the weekend and drenched our southern neighbors in New England under several inches of rain will make its debut in the Hub on Monday before leaving behind cool, early fall weather, according to the National Weather Service.

While rainfall in Boston is not currently expected to be nearly as heavy as that seen in Hartford County on Sunday, NWS Meteorologist Kristi Smith said people should be aware that significant precipitation is possible.

“Just be alert,” she told the Herald on Sunday.

Smith said as she spoke, she was watching a cold front exit Pennsylvania and the Great Lakes region, pushing wet weather ahead. The rain, she said, has stalled over northern Connecticut but will eventually move farther north, leaving the Boston area wet to start the week.

According to NWS forecasts, the Boston area has an 80 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms through Monday, with highs of 75 degrees. The weather service is currently predicting no more than 0.5 inches of rain, but Smith said Connecticut isn’t expecting much rain on Sunday, either.

“Parts of Connecticut received over 6 inches of rain. Boston was lucky to escape the worst and associated flooding, but we expect heavier rain and some isolated thunderstorms tomorrow,” she said.

The rainstorms could linger into Tuesday morning, Smith said, but when they move out, they will disappear with a sort of autumnal “whoosh” that brings with it dry weather and fall-like conditions.

“Early autumn: temperatures between 18 and 21 degrees,” she said. “The chance of rain will decrease significantly on Tuesday.”

Similar September conditions are expected through Wednesday and Thursday, she said, with highs expected to be between 18 and 21 degrees Celsius, lows at night around 10 degrees Celsius and mostly clear skies throughout.

Late summer returns on Friday, Smith said, with temperatures near 27 degrees Celsius and plenty of sunshine.
