The Wilmington area felt the effects of a possible tropical cyclone on Monday, bringing more than 380 millimeters of rain in some areas and bringing gusty winds and power outages.

After Tropical Storm Debby in August, it is the second storm of the hurricane season to bring excessive rainfall.

Photos of Carolina Beach and Southport

By Monday afternoon, most, if not all, of the streets in Carolina Beach were no longer safe to drive on. The same is true of many streets in Southport.

Southport authorities reported massive flooding in the town at the mouth of the Cape Fear River. Several streets were flooded and impassable. There were also numerous reports of flooding affecting homes.

In Carolina Beach, Mayor Lynn Barbee declared a state of emergency to provide additional resources to the region.

Numerous roads in New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties were flooded late Monday morning.

The number of power outages also increased.

According to Duke Energy’s outage map, major power outages were reported by noon to more than 1,000 customers in Castle Hayne and along the South College Road corridor in Wilmington between Pine Valley and Monkey Junction.

Tropical weather in Southport, NC, brings flooding and wind gusts

Due to a possible tropical cyclone with heavy rains and storms, several roads in the city of Brunswick are impassable due to flooding.

At 11am on Monday, the Southport Fire Department announced on Facebook that they were experiencing a high volume of calls, vehicles caught in floodwaters and flooded homes.

Vehicles flooded after tropical weather in Carolina Beach, NC

Vehicles on several streets in Carolina Beach were flooded after a storm that dumped more than 10 inches of rain hit the area on Monday. Video provided by Evan Pye.

By midday Monday, it was already difficult to get close to Carolina Beach and view the flooding.
