All Rite Aid stores in Michigan are closing, the pharmacy chain confirmed on Tuesday.
The latest list of Michigan store closures, submitted to bankruptcy court in recent days, marks the pharmacy’s complete exit from the state while bankruptcy proceedings are still ongoing.
A Rite Aid representative said in an email Tuesday afternoon that the pharmacy chain, which had 186 stores in Michigan two months ago, has filed a request to close all of them.
The pharmacy chain most recently reported the closure of 38 Michigan stores in three filings in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New Jersey since Aug. 2. That’s in addition to the 123 stores reported in filings since mid-June. The chain released a list of the first store closures in the fall.
In addition to closing all of its stores in Michigan, Rite Aid announced in June that it would also close its distribution center in Waterford Township, effective this Friday, and lay off 191 employees.
Rite Aid and two other major pharmacy chains, CVS Health and Walgreens, have closed hundreds of stores nationwide in recent years. Walgreens announced in late June that it would close up to 25% of its 8,700 U.S. stores over the next three years. That’s in addition to 350 closures since 2019.
CVS has closed about 600 stores since 2022 and expects to close another 300 in 2024. Rite Aid filed for bankruptcy in October after several years of annual losses.
The company had announced that it would close 400 to 500 of its 2,200 stores.
Experts attribute the closures to overbuilding, falling reimbursement rates for medications and changing consumer tastes.
