Petrol prices: Another day of price cuts at the pumps as costs continue to fall

Gasoline prices fell again on Wednesday, marking another week of declines in the average price of a gallon of regular gasoline, which is now about 5 cents lower per gallon than it was a month ago.

While prices have fluctuated in 2024, they have fallen in recent weeks and months. However, gas prices remain significantly higher than they were during former President Donald Trump’s administration.

Washington, DC

On Wednesday, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in the capital was $3.70, up from the previous day, when the price was $3.698. Regular gasoline is also more expensive in Washington, DC, than it was a week ago, when the average price was $3.692 per gallon. Prices are now slightly lower than they were a month ago, when motorists in Washington, DC paid $3.716 per gallon.

Delaware

The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in Delaware on Wednesday was $3.365, up significantly from Tuesday when it cost $3.288. Gas prices are lower than a week ago when the average was $3.372 per gallon. Additionally, gasoline is cheaper now than it was a month ago when drivers in the First State paid $3.461 for a gallon of regular.

Virginia

In Virginia, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline was $3.352 on Wednesday. That’s up from the previous day, when it cost just $3.317 per gallon. Gasoline prices in the state are lower than they were a week ago, when regular gasoline cost $3.369 per gallon. Prices are also lower now compared to a month ago, when the price for a gallon of regular gasoline was $3.389.

Maryland

On Wednesday, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in Maryland was $3.45. This is up from Tuesday, when the price was $3.396 per gallon. However, this is down from the previous week, when the price of gasoline in Maryland was $3.464 per gallon. Prices are also lower than a month ago, when people in Maryland paid $3.576 per gallon of regular gasoline.

Hawaii

Hawaii has the most expensive gasoline in the country on Wednesday, averaging $4.672 per gallon for regular. That’s a slight increase from Tuesday’s prices, when a gallon of regular gasoline averaged $4.669 in the state. A week ago, regular gasoline cost $4.677 per gallon, and a month ago it was $4.698. Hawaii recently became the state with the highest prices for a gallon of regular gasoline, overtaking California, which held that dubious distinction for every month in 2024 through August.

Mississippi

Mississippi continues to be the state with the lowest gasoline prices. On Wednesday, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in Mississippi was $2.949, a very slight decrease from Tuesday’s price of $2.953. A week ago, regular gasoline in the state cost $2.968 per gallon. All of these prices are much cheaper than the national average. Mississippi is the only state in the U.S. where the average price of regular gasoline is below $3.
