Pest control expert gives tips on how to keep pests out of your home before fall

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (WBRC) – While it may not feel like it yet, as temperatures slowly but surely begin to cool down, you should think about keeping unwanted guests out of your home.

When you see rodents like rats and mice in your home, it’s tempting to pack up and move out. But experts say there are easier ways to get rid of them before the colder months.

Kyle Keene, branch manager of Northwest Exterminating in Birmingham, says there are a few things to look out for.

The first sign is small pieces of droppings near food. Gnawing marks are another sign of rodents, as is a musky smell or scurrying around at night. Keene says that with any change in temperature, you can expect more wildlife activity and these critters trying to get into your home. You’ll want to make sure you keep your home clean and seal off any entry points as best you can.

“Seal entry points. Check your property for possible entry points. Rats can squeeze through openings as small as a quarter, and mice can squeeze through even smaller openings. Seal cracks in the floor and foundation, and make sure windows and doors are tightly closed,” he said.

He says landscaping is another important area. You should keep tree branches and other things away from your room. Keene says you should also check the gaps under the roof shingles and make sure they are firmly attached.
