Patrick Mahomes renounces support for a presidential candidate

Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes this week decided not to endorse any candidate in the 2024 presidential election.

On Wednesday, Mahomes spoke to reporters before his team’s practice for Sunday’s upcoming game against the Cincinnati Bengals and was asked about the upcoming presidential election between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.

“I don’t want my space and my platform to be used to endorse a candidate or whatever,” the three-time Super Bowl winner said. “I think my job is to inform people so they can register to vote. I want to inform people so they can do their own research and then make the best decision for themselves and their family.”

Mahomes’ comments came shortly after Taylor Swift endorsed Harris for president. Swift is currently dating Mahomes’ teammate Travis Kelce, who plays tight end for the Chiefs.

“I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes that I believe need a warrior to represent them,” Swift posted on Instagram. “I think she is a calm, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country when we are led by calm, not chaos. I was so encouraged and impressed by her choice of her running mate @timwalz, who has been an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman’s right to her own body for decades.”

In her statement of support, the 14-time Grammy winner noted that it was Trump’s use of fake artificial intelligence Swift to support him that “led her to the conclusion that as a voter, I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election.”

“The easiest way to fight misinformation is with the truth,” Swift added in her social media post.

On Wednesday, however, Trump spoke to Fox News’ Fox & Friendswhere he criticized Swift’s decision and compared her to Brittany Mahomes – the singer’s friend and alleged Trump supporter.

“It was just a matter of time,” Trump said of Swift’s support. “You can’t possibly support Biden. But (Swift is) a very liberal person. She always seems to support a Democrat and will probably pay a price for that in the market. But I like Brittany. Brittany is great. She’s the one I like much more than Taylor Swift. She’s the wife of the great quarterback (Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs). I think she’s great.”

“She’s a huge Trump fan. I like Brittany. I think Brittany is great,” Trump added.

Last month, Brittany Mahomes liked and then re-liked an Instagram post by Trump, sparking some criticism online.

Brittany Mahomes has largely avoided the political spotlight since then, aside from her responses to criticism on social media. In one post, she fired back, writing, “To be a hater as an adult, you have to have deep-rooted issues that you refuse to heal since childhood.”
