Parkchester will receive 9 million as part of the Bronx Metro-North Station Area Plan. This is how those responsible want to transform the neighborhood.

NEW YORK – Even though it doesn’t look like it right now, the East Bronx could soon be changing completely.

We learn more about the plan approved by the New York City Council to bring four new Metro-North stations to the borough, as well as thousands of new homes and jobs.

What is the zoning plan for the Bronx Metro-North Station?

With the Bronx Metro-North Station Area Plan approved by the City Council last week, neighborhoods in the East Bronx will see historic rezoning and transit system improvements.

According to the mayor’s office, the plan calls for four new Metro-North stations, 7,000 housing units and 10,000 permanent jobs, as well as modernizing public spaces and improving access to public transportation.

“This will completely change the way they can move, grow and live in our community,” said Council Member and Majority Leader Amanda Farias.

Farias says her district plans to build 2,000 new housing units as part of the plan and has secured $194 million for community development.

“We see the investment that the community deserves,” Farias said.

The Metro North stations are scheduled to be completed by 2027.

Parkchester residents want the city to focus on existing problems

Some Parkchester residents are already opposed to the new plan. They say the city needs to focus on solving the problems that already exist in the neighborhood. They also fear that the plan could negatively impact their quality of life.

Peter Hamilton of the Parkchester Watch Group is concerned that the plan to build new apartments will result in the loss of existing parking spaces and deprivation of sunlight from the units in the Parkchester North Condominium.

“The buildings will be a few feet lower than that chimney, so that garage will be demolished and you’ll see how close it is to our residential building,” Hamilton said.

However, Farias’ office said the proposed building will provide parking for current residents during and after construction, and thorough studies have shown that there will be shadows across the street. The building will also be limited to 23 stories, she said.

“Much of the district looked the same as it did when I lived here as an eight-year-old. And while that’s sometimes good, it also means there’s a lot of stagnation,” Farias said.
