Palestinian police arrest suspected bank robber in crowded store

PALESTINE, Texas (KLTV) – A man is in police custody Friday night after police say he was arrested at a bank he attempted to rob.

On Friday at 3:41 p.m., officers from the Palestine Police Department were called to the First Convenience Bank inside a Wal-Mart store where a robbery was in progress.

A man named Joseph White, 20, of Palestine, entered the bank and demanded a large sum of cash from a bank employee, police said. The man then said he would use violence if they did not give him the money.

A bank employee managed to inform a relative via text message that he had been robbed. The relative then made an emergency call.

Officers arrived at the scene and arrested White. Police say he was still standing at the bank teller’s counter when officers arrived. They did not find any weapons in White’s possession.

White was taken to the Anderson County Jail and booked without incident. He was charged with robbery, a second-degree felony.

“It was unknown at this time if the man was armed and the officers handled the situation very well in a crowded store,” said PPD Chief Mark Harcrow. “I commend the officers for their quick response and the safe arrest of this man.”

The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office also responded and assisted with the call.
