Orioles game thread for Saturday night: at Tigers, 6:10 p.m. ET

Let’s get this straight: Yesterday, the Orioles didn’t score until they were on their last out, losing 1-0 in a game that could have been won. The last few months have given us frustrating experiences with this Orioles offense, and Friday was the most frustrating moment of all.

Tonight’s game is the first opportunity to erase Friday’s embarrassment from our collective memory. The good news for Birdland is that Corbin Burnes is facing a team he has dominated in the past. Four years ago, in his only other start at Comerica Park, Burnes posted 7 IP, 1 H, 0 ER and 11 Ks. In addition to his experience against Detroit, the Orioles’ All-Star starter has been particularly stingy on the road this season. In 13 games away from Camden Yards, Burnes held opponents to a .197 average and a .594 OPS. When Burnes got in trouble on the road, it was usually because of the long ball — he allowed 12 HRs in 13 games. That shouldn’t be a big problem today, as Comerica is one of the most pitcher-friendly parks when it comes to limiting long balls.

The Tigers will counter Burnes with Beau Brieske as the opener, and later in the game we’ll likely see former first-round pick Ty Madden as well. After struggling against Brant Hurter’s sweeper last night, the Orioles will take a more traditional approach with Brieske and Madden. Both Brieske and Madden rely primarily on a four-seam fastball that sits in the mid- to upper-90s. Detroit’s opener pairs that fastball with a changeup-slider combo, while Madden prefers a slider-splitter duo on his secondary throws. Expect Brieske to play the first 1-2 innings, while the former Texas Longhorn takes over innings 3-6.

Given the state of the offense, it’s pointless to predict who might perform well against Brieske/Madden. However, with the Yankees losing their game against the Red Sox, hopefully the O’s offense is determined to make up for last night’s ineptitude and keep their hopes of winning the East alive.
