Only “some guys” on the Twins play with a sense of urgency

Carlos Correa caused a stir Tuesday night with his response to a reporter’s question about the Minnesota Twins’ urgency after they fell two games out of the wild-card race with five days to go in the regular season.

According to Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com, Correa was asked if he felt a sense of urgency in his presence.

“Some guys, yes,” Correa replied. “Some of us stepped up a notch today and tried to figure something out. We didn’t win, but we need to do more of that and find something right away at some point so we can go out and score more runs.”

Park said Correa was asked to provide more context to his “some guys” answer. Instead, Correa said, “We’re all trying our best and everyone wants to make the playoffs.” He then made it pretty clear that players on the team deal with frustration differently.

“Some guys see frustration as poison and some see it as fuel,” Correa said, according to Park. “The guys who see frustration as fuel are the ones who always come out on top, have great careers and stay in the game for a long time. We have a lot of young guys and a lot of people try to help them, but at the end of the day, everyone has to find a solution for themselves.”

The Twins are 11-23 since August 18th and have had one of the worst offenses and pitching teams in the league since then. We checked the numbers and they are brutally bad.

The Twins have blown their one-time 11-game lead over the Tigers in the wild-card race. Detroit and Kansas City are now tied for the final two wild-card spots, and both are two games ahead of Minnesota. According to Baseball Reference, Minnesota’s chances of making the postseason have dropped to about 18%. FanGraphs gives the Twins a 27% chance.

Every game must be won and the Twins must suffer a loss to the Tigers or Royals to have any chance of playing baseball in October.
