One of Utah’s most famous arches collapses, according to the National Park Service

A very famous and popular landmark in Utah’s Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, known as the “Double Arch,” collapsed last week, according to the National Park Service.

The area is home to some of the most popular hiking trails in the country, and the Double Arches were one of the most iconic sights along the way. Thankfully, no one was injured when they collapsed.

The Double Arches were over 190 million years old and the collapse was, according to officials, the result of erosion by wind and rain.

“(T)his event reminds us of our responsibility and the need to protect the natural resources around Lake Powell,” said Michelle Kerns, director of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, according to the BBC.

The National Park Service does not rule out the possibility that human intervention or causes could also be the cause. According to the same source, over 5 million people visited the site last year and it is one of the most visited destinations in Utah.

It’s a stark reminder that walkers need to appreciate the places and landscapes they have the opportunity to enjoy, as they may not last forever. But it’s also a solemn reminder to ensure you protect and preserve what you visit.

The 1.25 million acre park still has much to offer, but the legendary and iconic Double Arches will be sorely missed after their collapse.
