Old Dominion defeated Chants 3-1 on Saturday

NORFOLK, Va. – The Coastal Carolina volleyball team was defeated by the Old Dominion Monarchs 3-1 (12-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-19) on Saturday afternoon in Norfolk, Virginia. The loss drops the Chanticleers to 6-1. 9 overall and 2-2 in the Sun Belt as the Monarchs improve to 13-2 on the season and 2-0 in the league with the win.

Agata Lesiak led the Chanticleer offense with a game-high 14 kills Lauren Malone And Jalyn Stout tallied 12 and 11 kills. Stout had a game-high 21 total assists Cagla Bengi Added 13 assists.

Defensively, CCU managed a total of eight blocks Dilara Unal stopped four killing attempts while Emma Van Elslande And Valentina Varani In total there were three blocks on the network. Sydney Lewis finished with 10 digs and Stout added 11 digs to record her eighth triple-double of the season and the 22nd of her career.

ODU was led by Alice Munari with a team-high nine kills, while Elisa Maggi, Bryanna Jones and Myah Conway added eight, seven and seven kills, respectively. Ashlyn Belcher finished the game with 19 assists, a team-high.

The Monarchs stopped nine kill attempts, with Leeanne Lowery stopping six spikes at the net and Conway and Emma Schelah each blocking three attempts. Kate Kilpatrick finished with 14 digs.

In the opening set, Coastal took an 8-4 lead, sparked by a kill from Varani and capped by an error from ODU. After a 3-0 run by the Monarchs, the Chants responded with a 7-1 win, highlighted by back-to-back service aces from Stout.

Old Dominion responded with a 3-1 run to cut the deficit to 16-11, only to see CCU use a 9-1 lead to claim a 25-12 opening set win and tie the game 1-0 to lead, which included three kills Van Elslande.

ODU doubled the chants 8-4 to open the second set. Coastal used a 7-1 run to take an 11-9 lead, sparked by a Stout kill and capped by a Monarch unforced error. Old Dominion took the lead with an 8-2 score and led 17-13. The Chanticleers tied the set at 18-18 with a 5-1 spurt that forced the home Monarchs to call a timeout.

After the next seven rallies, Coastal Carolina led 22-21 before Old Dominion tied the game at 1-1 with a 25-23 win in the second set.

In the third set, ODU took a 7-2 lead before the Chants responded with a 5-1 win to trail 8-7, which also included blocks from Unal and Stout. A 3-1 run by the Monarchs extended the lead to 11-8 before Coastal scored four straight points to take a 12-11 lead, highlighted by two Stout service aces.

The two teams traded the next seven points and remained even at 15-15 before Coastal took an 18-15 lead on kills from Unal and Stout. The Monarchs outscored the Chanticleers 10-2, won the third set 25-20 and led the game 2-1.

In the fourth and final set, the two teams traded 3-0 runs, with CCU leading 5-4, before ODU scored a second 10-2 run to take a 14-7 lead, forcing the Chants to both to take time off. Coastal responded with a 6-2 run and trailed 16-13 before the Monarchs extended their lead with a 4-2 run. The two teams traded the next nine rallies to give Old Dominion a 25-19 victory in the fourth set and a 3-1 match victory.

Coastal Carolina will return to the HTC Center in Conway, SC as the Chanticleers host Georgia State on Friday and Saturday, October 11th and 12th. Opening serves are scheduled for 6:00 p.m. ET on Friday and 2:00 p.m. ET on Saturday.
