“We understand this economic model and we want nothing to do with it.” Greenwich Ent. has released an official trailer for Food and Countrya documentary by the filmmaker Laura Gabbert (City of Gold, Ottolenghi and the cakes of Versailles) about America’s broken food system. This film premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and is only now being released. Ruth Reichl—groundbreaking NY Times restaurant critic, groundbreaking Gourmet Magazine Editor, bestselling memoirist, and one of the most influential figures in American food culture for decades—is increasingly concerned about the fate of small farmers, ranchers, and chefs grappling with immediate and systemic challenges as the pandemic takes hold. Reichl speaks with innovators across the country working to fix America’s broken food system and build a more sustainable future. Across political and social lines, she meets with small farmers, ranchers, and chefs risking it all. Through Reichl’s eyes, we see the humanity and struggle behind the food we eat. It’s a frightening look at what’s wrong, but it’s also a hopeful film about the great potential to fix what’s broken.

“Ruth and I set out to follow the stories of innovators in every corner of America who are experimenting to create a broken food system. Taken together, their story is the story of all independent businesses struggling to survive in an increasingly consolidated industry. Their stories also hold up a mirror to us. How we produce and grow our food tells us who we are as a country, who we are as people.” –Director Laura Gabbert
