Observations on the Detroit Lions’ Week 1 win over the Los Angeles Rams

Touchdown just waiting to happen: It was nice to see Week 1 with the highlights of what we’ve seen from Jameson Williams throughout the offseason workout program and training camp. The third-year wide receiver had five catches for 121 yards with a 52-yard touchdown that he scored behind the defense. Williams has been playing really well since March, and when I spoke to him after the game, he still felt like he left a lot more plays on the field. This has to be exciting for the Lions going forward, as he played 52 snaps (85 percent of offensive plays) against the Rams, which is a career high.

“Personally, I’m expecting a big match, I think, it’s just great for the world because it’s my first,” Williams said afterward. “But I have a lot more planned. I don’t plan for this to be the best match of my career. I plan for this to be just the beginning of me being myself.”

The big game is coming: Second-year safety Brian Branch will watch the video of Sunday’s game and probably wonder, “What if?” We can see why the Lions like Branch as a safety. He’s so instinctive. He had opportunities in the game for a couple of interceptions that could have been big plays. Those are still coming. Lions fans will like to see No. 32 roaming the back of the defense.

Branch finished with seven tackles, one tackle for loss and three passes defended, making him the first Lions safety to finish a game with three passes defended and a tackle for loss.
