Stop & Shop supermarkets in New York and other states will soon no longer sell cigarettes and tobacco products.

Stop & Shop will stop selling these products in all 360 stores in New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Rhode Island by August 31, it said in a press release.

There are about 20 Stop & Shops in Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties. Most of them are in Westchester, with stores in Dobbs Ferry, Eastchester, Mamaroneck, Mount Kisco, Mount Vernon, North White Plains, New Rochelle, Ossining, Peekskill, Port Chester, Somers, Tarrytown, White Plains and Yonkers. (The Mount Vernon and Haverstraw stores are among 32 stores in the state scheduled to close on or before Nov. 2.)

“Our responsibility as a grocer extends far beyond our shelves, and we are committed to taking bold steps to help our associates, customers and communities work toward better health outcomes,” said Gordon Reid, president of Stop & Shop, in the Aug. 26 press release.

“From our team of board-certified dietitians who serve our customers free of charge to our trained and trusted pharmacy staff, Stop & Shop aims to promote the health and well-being of the neighborhoods we serve,” Reid said. “This exit from tobacco is another way we are achieving that goal.”

In her press release, Karen E. Knudsen, executive director of the American Cancer Society and the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, called this a step in the right direction to end the tobacco industry’s influence on children.

“And we know more can be done to reduce the consequences of tobacco use in our communities,” Knudsen said. “From state and local governments to schools and businesses, we can all do our part to protect public health. We urge state lawmakers to prioritize funding for tobacco control programs so that those motivated to quit through these efforts have the tools they need to succeed.”

Katie Thornell, pharmacy manager at Stop & Shop, said: “The health of our communities is a priority and quitting smoking significantly reduces the risk of developing smoking-related diseases. Our licensed pharmacists can help you with smoking cessation advice and vaccination recommendations for people whose immune systems may be weakened by smoking.”

Stop & Shop Supermarket Company, a limited liability company, is owned by the Dutch company Ahold Delhaize.
