NFL Monday night: Mac Jones makes his first relief appearance

Quarterback Mac Jones made his first appearance of the 2024 season on Monday night, and it was the former Alabama All-American’s first start off the bench in his NFL career.

Jones replaced starter Trevor Lawrence as the Buffalo Bills earned a 47-10 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

In the NFL’s other Monday night game, Washington rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels completed 21 of 23 passes for 254 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions and ran 12 times for 39 yards and a touchdown in a 38-33 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. The game was the first in the NFL without a turnover or punt since 1940.

Jacksonville brought in Trevor Lawrence when the Jaguars were trailing 40-10 after he completed 21 of 38 passes for 178 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Jones played in Jacksonville’s final two series and completed 5 of 8 passes for 22 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions.

Jones’ first possession ended when he lost a fumble on a sack of former Troy star Javon Solomon, who made his NFL debut Monday night.

On the next series, the Jaguars moved from their 30-yard line to Buffalo’s 10-yard line, where Jones’ pass into the end zone on fourth-and-8 attempt was incomplete with 44 seconds left.

Buffalo scored touchdowns on all five possessions in the first half, with quarterback Josh Allen throwing four TD passes.

“There have to be changes,” Jacksonville coach Doug Pederson said of his winless team after the game. “Whether it’s personnel or game design, everything is on the table. Let’s say it. And those are all things that I have to look at, that we have to look at as a team and make adjustments.”

Jones was selected in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft and was the starting quarterback for the New England Patriots until he was benched six games before the end of the 2023 season. The Jaguars acquired Jones through a trade in March.
