In Week 2 of the 2024 season, Christian McCaffrey will face another week off for the San Francisco 49ers.
After missing last week’s win over the New York Jets, McCaffrey was placed on the injured list, according to multiple media reports. McCaffrey will now miss at least the next four games while he recovers from Achilles tendinitis and a calf strain.
On Friday, McCaffrey was ruled out for San Francisco’s second game against the Minnesota Vikings due to his injuries. In a press conference the same day, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters they were considering placing him on the injured list, adding that McCaffrey had been in a lot of pain during practice on Thursday.
“It’s different, but since Thursday was the worst day of pain, we’ll discuss it in the next 24 hours,” Shanahan said.
McCaffrey cannot return to the 49ers until Week 6 against the Seattle Seahawks at the earliest.
Marquise “Hollywood” Brown must undergo surgery to repair a dislocated shoulder joint and is placed on the injured list by the Kansas City Chiefs.
The 27-year-old wide receiver did not play in the Chiefs’ Week 1 win over the Baltimore Ravens and has been out since sustaining the injury in the team’s first preseason game in August. He was given a 4-6 week recovery plan earlier this month, but after further evaluation, it was decided that surgery would be the best next step as the shoulder was not healing properly.
Bengals WR Tee Higgins says he is not faking his injury
Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins did not play in Week 1 as he was hampered by a hamstring injury, but some fans believed his absence during the loss to the New England Patriots was related to his dissatisfaction with his contract status.
That couldn’t be further from the truth, Higgins said.
“I just don’t understand why the fans think I’m faking an injury when the deadline for a contract extension has passed,” Higgins told ESPN. “I just don’t understand why they think I’m faking an injury. That doesn’t make sense to me.”
Higgins did not practice on Friday, his third consecutive day off the field, and his participation in Week 2 is considered questionable.
“I want to go out there and give my teammates 100 percent Tee Higgins, you know what I mean?” Higgins told ESPN. “I don’t want to give them 50% and do half-measures just to be present on the field.”
Russell Wilson is “ever closer” to his return
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson missed Week 1 due to a calf injury, and while Justin Fields played well in their 18-10 win over the Atlanta Falcons, they would like to have their designated No. 1 playmaker healthy and ready to play.
Head coach Mike Tomlin said Wilson’s participation in Sunday’s game, when the Steelers visit Wilson’s old team, the Denver Broncos, is questionable.
Wilson was scheduled to start against the Falcons but aggravated a calf injury he suffered in training camp. He said Thursday that he is “getting closer and closer” to returning.
“I’m just trying to be smart,” Wilson said. “I’ve got a lot of work to do on the field and everything else today, throwing and stuff, so I’m just trying to be smart.”
