New Yorkers use Mobile ID for faster, safer airport check-in

New York State has launched a groundbreaking digital solution to make airport security checks faster and more convenient. New York Mobile ID (MiD) is a secure digital version of a state-issued driver’s license, learner’s permit or identification card that can be accessed via a smartphone. Since its launch in June, over 100,000 New Yorkers have signed up for this innovative service.

Optimized travel experience

New York Mobile ID provides a contactless and secure way to verify your identity at nearly 30 participating airports across the country, including all terminals at LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy airports. Through a partnership with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), New Yorkers can now use their MiD at TSA security checkpoints, simplifying the travel experience and reducing wait times.

Expanding use beyond airports

The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is actively working to expand the use of New York Mobile ID beyond airports. Businesses across the state, including auto dealerships, bars, restaurants, and financial institutions, are being educated on how to accept Mobile ID as a valid form of identification. This broader acceptance of MiD is expected to make everyday transactions more secure and efficient.

Robust security measures

The New York Mobile ID was developed with privacy and security as top priorities. It complies with international identification standards and uses advanced encryption to protect personal data. The app can only be unlocked via Face ID, TouchID or a secure PIN, so only the authorized user can access their MiD. Importantly, the data about when and where the MiD is used is not tracked or stored, protecting the user’s privacy.

Simple registration process

Signing up for the New York Mobile ID is easy. Users can download the app from the App Store or Google Play, register their phone number, and upload pictures of their physical ID. A quick selfie is taken to verify the user’s identity against DMV records. Once verified, the MiD can be used anywhere it is accepted, including in other states and countries.
