New security checkpoint on the east side of Denver International Airport half completed

Denver International Airport is halfway through construction of its newest east side security checkpoint. The checkpoint will be identical to the west side security checkpoint and will feature the latest technology to help passengers get through TSA faster.

At the East Security Checkpoint, the pedestrian bridge between the East and West Checkpoints is slowly taking shape. This means that once the East Checkpoint is complete, passengers will be able to walk across the A-Line bridge without ever having to take the train.

Additionally, the East Security Checkpoint will have the floor relocated and openings created for the second triple escalator and the elevators to the train. The East Security Checkpoint will be built as a mirror image of the West Security Checkpoint. There will be 17 new screening lanes, automated screening lanes that can accommodate three passengers each, and passengers will be able to leave their electronic devices in their bags.

The new TSA checkpoints are designed to process passengers in less than 15 minutes, making the passenger experience faster and more pleasant.

“Consistency is extremely important from an operational perspective,” said Michael Sheenan, senior vice president of special projects at DEN. “If things are constantly changing, people don’t notice. If we have consistent operations and make this a standard process, I hope it will improve the learning curve and even help improve efficiency near the checkpoint even further.”

Once the East Security Checkpoint is completed, the South Security Checkpoint will no longer exist. This works well because the West Checkpoint has been gaining traction since it opened in February.

“More people are passing through the West every day, and we have fewer processing lanes than we have at the South Security Checkpoint,” said Aubrey Roth, senior manager of terminal operations at the DIA.

Completion of the East Security Checkpoint is scheduled for late summer next year, between August and September 2025.
