New restaurant serves “tortillas for kings” in Norton Shores

NORTON SHORES, MI – A family-owned restaurant serving authentic Mexican cuisine has opened its doors.

El Regio Authentic Mexican Tortillas held a grand opening celebration on Tuesday, August 13th at 4165 Grand Haven Road in Norton Shores.

Co-owner Sheyla Vansuch prides herself on the restaurant’s traditional Mexican tortillas, which are made from scratch.

“The idea is to bring authentic flair here to Muskegon,” she said.

El Regio sources its dough from Mexico, which is more expensive for Vansuch but also more authentic, resulting in a better product for health-conscious customers.

The menu also includes authentic tacos, tamales and vegetarian options.

“It’s fresh, no chemicals, no preservatives; that’s what we’re trying to do,” Vansuch said.

Regular hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The restaurant opens early to give guests the opportunity to enjoy a traditional Mexican breakfast, Vansuch said.

“I’m Mexican and we always have tacos for breakfast,” she said. “Here we only have bagels and bread, so I want to give you the opportunity to stop by at 7 in the morning – maybe you’re on your way to work – for burritos or tacos on your way to work.”

Vansuch said she plans to expand her hours in the evenings as she hires more people.

El Regio is the product of a vision that has taken at least two years to develop. Vansuch and her sister Sarya Nicholas had the idea of opening a restaurant in 2022, but for a while they struggled to get the business off the ground while working separate jobs and caring for their children.

After completing construction and obtaining all necessary permits, El Regio is finally ready to live up to the motto “Tortillas for Kings” hung on its front door.

“This is for me, my future and my family,” Vansuch said. “And here I am, two years later.”
